What Is pH?

pH measures how acidic or alkaline (basic) water is, on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral — pure water. Below 7 is acidic; above 7 is alkaline. Each whole number represents a tenfold change in acidity.

For example, water with a pH of 6 is ten times more acidic than water with a pH of 7. Water with a pH of 5 is 100 times more acidic than neutral.

Why pH Matters for Your Home

Pipe Corrosion (Low pH)

Acidic water eats away at metal pipes, causing pinhole leaks, blue-green stains, and elevated metal levels in your drinking water. Copper pipes are especially vulnerable below pH 6.5.

Chlorine Effectiveness

Chlorine disinfects most effectively at pH 7.2-7.8. Above pH 8.0, chlorine becomes less effective as a disinfectant, which is why some municipal systems struggle with high-pH water.

Taste and Palatability

Water around pH 7 tastes neutral and refreshing. Acidic water tastes metallic or sour. Highly alkaline water tastes flat or bitter. Most people prefer water in the 6.5-8.0 range.

Soap and Detergent Performance

pH affects how soap behaves. Acidic water reduces lathering. Alkaline water can leave soap film. Combined with hardness, pH extremes make cleaning even more difficult.

What Affects Your Water's pH?

  • Source water geology: Limestone areas tend toward alkaline; granite areas tend toward acidic
  • Municipal treatment: pH is adjusted to prevent pipe corrosion in distribution systems
  • Carbon dioxide: Dissolved CO2 forms carbonic acid, lowering pH
  • Water softeners: Softening slightly increases pH (more alkaline)
  • RO systems: RO water is slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) until remineralized

Do You Need pH Treatment?

Most homeowners do not need to actively adjust pH. If your water is within the EPA's 6.5-8.5 range, it is generally fine. Treatment becomes necessary when:

  • pH below 6.5: Acid neutralizer (calcite filter) raises pH and prevents corrosion
  • pH above 8.5: Less common, but may indicate other water quality issues worth investigating
  • Corrosion signs present: Blue-green stains, metallic taste, or pinhole leaks mean pH treatment is urgent
